Someone Cares Africa
The orphanage Christian ministry Someone Cares Africa was founded by Marich able Chemonges. It was recognized Uganda’s government as an NGO (non-governmental organization) since 2019.
Marich was born in 1994. His father passed away in 1998, his mother in 2000. He has no memories of them. He worked any job he could to raise himself and his younger brother and sister. His parents’ families wanted nothing to do with them. He worked hard to afford learning English and writing in school. His life goal is to help the many other orphans of the rural East Ugandan community he’s from have a less difficult childhood experience than himself and his siblings.
Through his persistent effort, grassroots-style donations provide 200 orphans aged 2-16 basic human rights such as water, shelter, food, and education when financially possible. About 100 trusted low-income widows/elders opened their homes to the Kapchorwa community’s orphans. Through Someone Cares Africa, they occasionally receive emergency rations and basic (~$20/dose) medicine when necessary and possible.
We recognize this is a spectacular undertaking and that Marich and his team of 10 (cooks, teachers, caretakers) cannot do it without us. We often endure various levels of discomfort to support and fund Marich’s charge, but are honored to feed a natural spring of basic human rights for impoverished children. It’s worth it. But we need help.
Words inadequately describe our depth of appreciation for any contribution to this cause. We will build something that lasts.
This June we sent over 50 orphans to Kapchorwa’s public schools by funding their semester’s tuition, and per usual teach English/Lugandan/Bible lessons at the ministry every day using a chalkboard, notebooks, and pencils for the rest.
10/30/2024 Current major expenses:
1) $500 for next week’s food expenses (over 1,000 meals of beans, posho or rice, veggies and spices).
2) $2,000 to build a lasting kitchen on the half acre we strived to purchase and develop the past 3 years (bricks, cement, labor)
3) $3,000 for a tin roof, doors, and windows for the unfinished portion of the orphanage/school/cafeteria we’ve constructed
Someone Cares Africa’s current ripped tent setup is on land they don’t own. It has been raining a lot, it leaks often, and the poles are bent. We need to move ministry operations down the road to the new location as soon as possible. The orphans, widows, elders, and entire community of Kapchorwa will be grateful for decades. Our goal is to accomplish this by 2025.
Even relatively small donations really help. What you might think is modest or “barely worth it” goes a long way at ~$0.30/meal.
